Industry Discussion on Required Core Units:

In order to create generic flexibility for niche market industries, Training Packages Core units need to have a new listing of Industry specific Required Core Units which would follow the generic Training Package Core Units.

Industry discussion is therefore required to define and apply what Industry specific required core units would consist of.

Identification of specific skills each Certificate III student must gain during their training will allow our industry to consolidated and build on a firm foundation for greater business viability.

The challenge of skills inconsistency’s and voids comes from some traditional training institutions allowing individuals into courses when they have not completed the fundamental skills required, as per the Australian Quality Frame works directives, to enter higher levels of education. As well as the standardization of training programs (cutting of costs) within in each institution to meet individual intuition profitability. That is to say, there has been a significant focus on low cost units delivered to students and the reduction of face to face contact hours.

It should be noted that these cost cutting practices are not the lectures fault. It is a governance issue. The cost cutting prevents good educators from delivering training to the student at the industry prefer standard.

So to summarize, the Jewellery Manufacturing industry and small business training is undermined specifically for these reasons:

  • Low cost standardization of program units – cheap units to deliver becoming compulsory for students
  • Reduced face to face contact hours
  • Ineligible people being allowed into courses without having the pre-required skills
This has led to several industry short comings:
  • Cost to employers in lost revenue as new employees can not do the required tasks and therefore will require further training. This is not associated to individual workshop protocols.
  • Costs to student of training not fulfilling work place requirements even though they may have done quite well at the course attended.
  • Increased work load on small business and employers
  • General stress on all individuals associated – employer and new employee

From the electives list the Jewellery Training Council suggests the following become part of the Required core units list in no specific order, points are also listed. Please note, these are suggested Required units for all Certificate III Jewellery Manufacturing courses and require discussion.

Current Training Package Details

Training Packaging rules.
The qualification is:

MEM30605 Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture

The minimum requirements for achievement of the Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture are:
Completion of all core units of competency listed below, and
Completion of Group A Jewellery Manufacture stream units from the list below to the value of at least 40 points, and
Completion of units from Group B Certificate III Trade specialisation units listed in Appendix I, Volume 1 of the Training Package, to bring the total value to at least 73 points

Points associated with prerequisites count towards the total (refer to units and prerequisites listing in Appendix 2, Volume 1).

Appropriate Group B elective units to the value of 16 points may be chosen from other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses where those units are available for inclusion at Certificate III. Note that the elective units listed below include all of the units that are approved for selection from the MEM Training Package for use in this qualification. This meets the NQC requirement that one sixth of the total units must be able to be selected from other qualifications in the same Training Package.

Registered Training Organisations must seek a determination from Manufacturing Skills Australia in respect of the allocation of points values for units of competency drawn from other Training Packages or accredited courses.

Only select units that would be suitable for Jewellery Manufacture occupational outcomes
